Each week I like to share my understanding of a horticultural word or term. This week I am looking at the word potager.

Potager.

A potager is an ornamental kitchen garden. Mixing ornamental plants with vegetable plants to create a productive yet aesthetically pleasing garden. Personally I prefer to only grow edibles but I see the need for gardens to look good to the eye.

The term potager comes from the French word for the kitchen garden.

We have a small area that I call the potager. This area has a mixture of raspberries, rosemary and daffodils as well as more edibles and flowers. Although I call this area the potager I should make more of an effort to maintain it and create a true potager garden.
