Join me in this weeks podcast where I discuss the seeds we could be sowing in January and what tasks we could be tackling on our allotment and vegetable patches. I also share the latest from the plots.
Seeds to sow in January
Below I have included a list of seeds we can sow this month
- Onions can be sown this month to bulk up in time for planting out in March.
- Leeks can be sown. I use polystyrene boxes for extra insulation.
- Broad beans can be sown outside in milder areas or in a greenhouse or cold frame
- Microgreen are great to grow on a kitchen windowsill for some great salads or garnish
- Early crops of lettuces, summer brassicas (cauliflower or cabbages for example) can be sown undercover
- Also undercover its worth sowing some carrots. A variety I have success with sowing at this time of year is Amsterdam forcing
- Towards the end of the month sow aubergines and chillies with some bottom heat. This plants benefit from a long growing season.
- Sow some tomatoes this month for the purpose of growing these in a greenhouse in March.
- Finally a wide collection of herbs can be sown, parsley, coriander, basil and tarragon to name a few.
Tasks for January
We also have a lot of tasks to tackle this month
- Continue harvesting crops such as parsnips and leeks
- Check our food stores
- Remove any yellowing leaves on brassicas
- Cover empty ground with membrane (or cardboard)
- Prune apple and pear trees as well as current and gooseberry bushes. You can hear the previous podcast on pruning here.
- Force rhubarb
- Remove snow from building roof tops
- Make growing plans for the year ahead. Make lists and order any seeds or potatoes that you might need.
