Weekly harvest report

Weekly harvest report for 1st January to 7th January 2025

Well it’s been a while since I wrote one of these weekly harvest reports. Back in the day I would write these out each week sharing what I’ve harvested and how much it was worth.

For 2025 I thought it would be an idea to bring this feature back but I would still love to know what produce you have harvested.

The first week of January is a funny week. After the Christmas period where we have gorged ourselves on a wide range of rich foods, I often find myself wanting to eat something more simple.

However this year we had so much leftover food from the Christmas period, we didn’t feel the need to harvest loads of food only what was necessary.

So let’s take a look at what we have harvested

Our main produce has been our chicken eggs from our small backyard flock. Our 4 chickens have given us 12 eggs this which is certainly plenty. If we where to buy these eggs from Aldi as a economical supplier they would cost us £2.79 and from Waitrose and a premium food supplier they would have cost £4.25.

We have also harvest salad leaves as and when we need them. We harvest these fresh almost every day to enjoy with our meal. So each we allow for a bag of salad leaves which from Aldi would cost £0.75 and from Waitrose would cost £2.

It’s the same with herbs of which we do harvest almost every day while cooking our meals. Little and often is the name of the game here. A single bag of herbs from Aldi would cost 52p and from Waitrose 80p

This brings our total value of or food harvested this week to for economy food £4.06 and for premium food £7.05.

Now I believe that when we grow our own food, the food we produce is of the highest quality much higher in value than even a premium grocery store. however many people do grow there own food to save money at the same time.

How much have you harvested this week?
