The Salad Green Revolution: Creating Your Own Homemade Salad Seed Mix Recipes

Welcome to the Veg Grower Podcast, where I'm on a mission to grow all my fruit, vegetables, and herbs in my garden and allotment. In this weeks podcast Richard is discussing how to grow delicious salad greens from homemade salad seed mixes, including some recipes for making your own mixes. But first, let me give you an update on what's been happening on the allotment and home plot this week.

Allotment Update:

Unfortunately, it's been a rainy week, so I haven't been able to do as much on the allotment as I would have liked. However, I did manage to fit some glass to the greenhouse and lay down a wood chip mulch around my fruit bushes. I also planted more potatoes, which are coming along nicely.

Home Plot Update:

On the home plot, I've been busy with some new projects. I've repurposed an old fridge into a cold frame and sown some melon seeds. I've also started a potato experiment to see which varieties grow best in different types of compost. It's all very exciting!

Now, let's get back to the main topic of this post: how to grow delicious salad greens from seed mixes.

Types of Salad Greens:

In order to create a tasty salad mix, it's important to choose the right types of greens. Some popular choices include lettuce, Rocket, kale, spinach, and mustard greens. Each of these greens has its own unique flavour and texture, and they can be mixed and matched to create a variety of tasty salads.

Homemade Salad Mix Recipes:

One great way to ensure that your salad greens are fresh and flavourful is to make your own seed mixes. Here are a few recipes to get you started:

  • Classic Salad Mix: 2 parts lettuce seeds, 1 part Rocket seeds, 1 part spinach seeds.
  • Spicy Salad Mix: 1 part Rocket seeds, 1 part mustard green seeds, 1 part radish seeds.
  • Nutty Salad Mix: 2 parts lettuce seeds, 1 part kale seeds, 1 part chard seeds.

To make your own seed mix, simply combine the seeds in a bowl and mix well. Then, sow the seeds according to the instructions on the packet, and watch as your delicious salad greens begin to grow!
