How I grow leeks
This week Richard has started his first batch of seeds and this got him thinking about how he grows his leeks.
Seeds can be sown between now and April, Richard always starts his off in January in polystyrene boxes, but other options are available.
Germination can be slow usually Richard thinks his seeds have failed before they show signs of growth, but once germinated they will happily grow in the box until planting time.
Planting time can be from April to July and many people will plant them in the bed where first early potatoes where growing after the potatoes have been harvested. Once growing keep weed free, well watered and fed with chicken manure pellets and they should grow well.
Leeks are hardy and will survive some very cold weather which makes them a fantastic and tasty winter crop.
Recipe of the week
With leeks being featured so much in this weeks podcast it seemed fitting that the recipe also included leeks.
This leek and potato soup is delicious and well worth making to keep in the freezer.
