Hatching.

Each week I like to share my understanding of a horticultural word or term. This week I am looking at hatching.

Hatching.

This week's word is not strictly horticultural. It is however relevant as today my first quail has hatched. Head over to my Facebook page to see a few small videos from the day.

Hatching is pretty simply the act of a young bird or other animal breaking open its egg in order to emerge. In a sense the bird is being born.

In the case of us gardeners this will probably only be of relevance if we are hatching our own poultry such as chickens ducks or quail. Wild birds will also hatch from their own eggs in the spring time. I like to encourage birds to hatch their eggs in my ivy and trees for effective pest control.

Have you ever hatched any eggs? Let me know in the comments or email me here.Hatching
