Evening Richard, my idea is a outdoor kitchen garden, ie : grow anything you would cook in the BBQ or pizza oven , then all your ingredients are to hand.
also quick question, how deep should I spread my grass cutting on the veg beds to mulch. Thanks again. Stuart Jackson -
Hi Richard, how about an edible pollinator pitstop.
You could have:
Edible flowers like Cornflower and Marigold – flowers can be used in baking etc.
Something from the carrot family such as celery, fennel, dill, parsley etc that you can use as normal but then let go to seed for the flowers (that way your also getting a seed harvest too eventually).
Salsify – you can eat the root but if you let it flower its great for pollinators and really pretty.
Rat tail radish – flowers are great for honey bees, hoverflies etc and the seed pods taste amazing.
Breadseed poppy, garlic chives and cat mint as some other suggestions all really useable in cooking but also great for pollinators and maybe a little different to things you might already be growing.
in the middle you could bury a small terracotta pot with the hole covered up and then pop a pot saucer on top filled with marbles or small pebbles. The pot can act as a olla pot for watering and the tray on top is a little water station for all the pollinators that come to visit.
A mini oasis in a sink! -
I would use it as a pond with some rice fish in. Couple of pond plants and a small water lilly with a rock ramp for the critters
